The German government wants to encourage the construction of new coal and gas power plants with millions of euros from a fund for promoting clean energy and combating climate change.
That’s the information coming out of the Ministry of Economics and Technology according to The Local.
Does this concept not scream out a big FU to environmentalists around the world? It sure seems that way to me. The German government claims they need the coal burning plants to maintain their energy sources as they transfer away from nuclear energy.
Annual funding for the new plants could total more than €160 million per year between 2013 and 2014 alone, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported on Wednesday.
As these government projects develop, there will most certainly be increased costs associated with them. Money originally set aside for research and development of renewable energy sources will slowly fill the cost gaps in the new coal burning plants.
And the environmental pressure group Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND) said additional coal-fired plants were entirely unnecessary.
People continue to lose the battle against corporate polluters, but have no fear, nature will ultimately win, but we won’t be here to experience it.
